COMMUNITY RESIDENCES

Living independently while fostering a sense of connection, inclusion and support

Apollo SDA Community Residences

Our Community Residences are an innovative, holistic approach to delivering accommodation for people living with a disability. Our ‘dynamic and adaptable’ design framework introduces a new concept in accessible housing with in-built flexibility to accommodate IL, FA, robust and HPS participants and many with hybrid characteristics to cater for the changing needs of participants, including ageing in place.

Purposefully designed to balance privacy, safety and social connection, ensuring each participant feels at home. Robust dwellings are located towards the rear of the property, often backing onto bushland to minimise environmental triggers and enhance privacy. HPS dwellings are typically situated at the front, allowing for seamless access to vehicles and nearby services. Centrally located community facilities are accessible to all residents, encouraging social interaction, shared experiences, and a true sense of belonging.

We design every community residence intentionally. Our very deliberate participant-led approach is to engage with participants and their families very early on in the design stages so that we can build a home that exceeds the NDIS design criteria whilst specifically meeting the needs and wishes of its tenants, in its design and function.

Our homes and communities are developed to improve energy efficiency, reduce expenses for participants and ultimately minimise emissions. We have received a 10 out 10 Nathers rating on one of our Cairns dwellings, with the majority of our community residences receiving an 8 out of 10, meaning participants living in the communities will have lower utility costs and a lower carbon footprint.

Shared Community Spaces

We believe the benefits of community living extend well beyond the walls of a home. That’s why our outdoor community spaces are thoughtfully designed to enhance wellbeing, encourage social connection, and support diverse sensory and mobility needs.

Designs for community spaces vary for each development; they can include the following:

  • Landscaped gardens – Native plants creating a soothing, sensory-rich environment.
  • Undercover areas – Shaded seating areas to enjoy.
  • Pathways – Wheelchair friendly paths ensuring accessibility to the community spaces.
  • BBQ – Communal BBQ to encourage outdoor meals and gatherings.
  • Recreational Areas – So tenants can engage in sporting activities such as basketball.
  • Animals – Our homes are pet-friendly and one of our community residences in Deception Bay has a chook pen. Where the residents enjoy collecting the eggs.
  • Magnesium Pool – Designed for participants to enjoy a dip. Magnesium pools are said to have many health benefits for skin, and can also be good for the muscles and joints.

Our community spaces are designed to benefit the participants living in the community and enhance their environment and lifestyle. For many residents, access to a calm, social and engaging outdoor environment can improve their mood, well-being, social confidence, daily routines and independence.
